Peptides are short chains of amino acids that are the building blocks of proteins (protein = collagen, elastin and keratin that affect the skin’s texture, clarity, elasticity and firmness). These are essential for the function and appearance of the skin.
There are a large number of different peptides, and these have different effects on and in the cells. Which effects depend on which peptides you use.
Many peptides can trigger reactions in the cells, ie they initiate increased production of, for example, collagen and elastin. Peptides with this function can affect how the skin appears in terms of elasticity, firmness, pigmentation and fine lines and wrinkles.
Another group of peptides are carriers of other substances, such as copper and manganese, into the skin cells. Some of these carrier peptides have also been shown in studies to have good results on skin firmness, wrinkles, darker skin areas, skin thickness and can also have positive effects on hair growth.
Some peptides can block the neurotransmitters that cause the muscles in the skin to contract, making the skin appear smoother and smoother. Fine lines and wrinkles will then be less visible.
Peptides with the ability to inhibit enzymes can be used in skin care to help reduce the harmful effects of UVB radiation.
