Mandelic acid
A type of alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that acts as an exfoliant. Due to its large molecular size, it is generally better tolerated than glycolic acid by those with sensitive skin. AHA acids work in the top cell layer of the skin (Stratum corneum). They weaken the bonds between the skin cells in the epidermis and cause a slight peeling of the skin (peeling). This removes the top layer of the horn and gives smoother, cleaner, tighter and more radiant skin.
Several clinical studies have confirmed that fruit acids are an effective treatment method for skin improvement. Fine lines, wrinkles, pigment changes and roughness in the skin are improved with the use of alpha-hydroxy acids. Common side effects are redness of the skin, dryness and slight burning. The treatment is tolerated by most people. It is important to use sun protection in the summer.
