Key features

• Inside our cells are small structures called chromosomes. Each chromosome has a protective cap called telomeres, which acts as a safety mechanism to protect our DNA.
• Telomeres are tiny caps on the ends of DNA strands/chromosomes and provide protection by controlling cell division and ensuring that the strands stay intact. Think of telomeres as the plastic caps on shoelaces; without them, the laces would become frayed and “out of control.”
• From birth, our cells go through many rounds of cell division. With each cell division, the telomeres shorten a little. You can compare it to using a paper clip on a clipboard, and with each clip, the telomere gets a little shorter.
• When they become too short, the DNA strands become damaged, leading to cell death. This is a natural process, and over time, telomeres become “used up” and lose their ability to protect DNA from the effects of aging.
• Therefore, it is important to protect telomeres from additional stresses that use up the “clips” we have available.

1. UV rays:

DNA damage: UV rays from the sun can directly damage the DNA in skin cells and increase oxidative stress and inflammation.
Activation of enzymes: UV rays can activate enzymes that accelerate telomere shortening.
Accelerated cell division : Prolonged exposure to UV rays can lead to more cell divisions than normal to repair sun damage.
